Road Investigation Command

Description:

Utilizes LIDAR data which was captured with a video.

Instructions:

The following objects are needed for this function to operate (these objects are provided by surveyor):

  1. Drawing with the road centreline and image names
  2. Images (exported from the video at specific intervals),
  3. Intensity Orthos file (.ecw files).

The image below shows an example of a drawing with an alignment and image names:

  1. To load the .ecw files, type MAPIINSERT into the command line and press Enter. Multiple files can be selected using the Shift and Ctrl keys:

  1. Move the Civil 3D window to your secondary screen and click on this command in the ribbon.

  2. Select an alignment, then select the text in the drawing. The Road Investigation window will appear on the screen. Go to Options – Set image folder and specify the path for the folder with the images:

  4. Sort the images by name:

  5. When you double-click on an image a preview will appear on the right-hand side of the Road Investigation window and the Civil 3D drawing zooms to its location:

  6. The default image size might be too small. To change the image size, stretch the image window and click on the Save Size command to apply the size to all the other images (do not move the image window too much to the top otherwise it will shift down again):

  7. As mentioned above, users can view the image and the Civil 3D drawing at the same time. The image below shows a road patch which can be seen on the image and in the drawing. Any other problematic areas can be investigated:

  8. Areas can be measured and stored in the Road Investigation window. Right-click on the area cell in the Road Investigation window, use the Draw area 1 polyline command and specify the area in Civil 3D:

  1. To remove an area, right-click on the value and use the Remove polyline for area1.... command. The polyline will also be removed from the drawing:

  2. All information from the Road Investigation window can be exported to a .csv file with the Export to CSV command. A .csv file with the drawing can be used as a customer report.
