Parts Lists (Civil 3D performance)

The Devotech Civil 3D drawing templates contain extensive libraries of pipes and structures developed over many years. These libraries are called parts lists and they have an impact on the drawing opening time as well as the drawing size. If a drawing will not contain any pipes or structures, the parts lists can be deleted to decrease the drawing opening time as well as the drawing size. The table below compares the drawing size and opening time of empty drawings based on the Devotech RSA Civil 3D template version 2015 with and without parts lists (Civil 3D 2017 was used for testing):

Civil 3D 2018's opening time of a drawing with the parts lists is about six seconds, sometimes it can take much longer. The steps described below, of removing the parts lists, are not necessary for Civil 3D 2018 from a performance point of view, but rather to reduce the drawing size.

  1. To delete parts lists in the existing drawing or template, go to Toolspace – Settings – Pipe Network – Parts Lists, right-click on the parts list and select Delete from the menu. Delete only the following parts lists: Sewer, Stormwater and Water. The Jacking parts list is very small and does not have any significant impact on performance. If all the parts lists are deleted Civil 3D will freeze for a few seconds when accidentally clicking on the Create Network by Layout command because it needs to create parts in the Standard parts list:

  2. The Stormwater parts list has an orange triangle next to the name meaning that this parts list is used in the settings and it cannot be deleted.

  3. To delete the Stormwater parts list, you will need to replace the style in the settings with another style. Right-click on the Stormwater parts list and use the Replace With command from the menu:
