Profile View (drawing template)

A longsection consists of a Profile View and Profile View Bands:

Profile view bands are grouped into profile view band sets. There is a profile view style for each profile view band set, the style name specifies which profile view to use for a specific band set:

The image above shows that any Channel profile view style can be used for any Channel band set. The Mass-haul profile view style can be used for two band sets, one with the chainage values in kilometres and one in meters.

Some profile view styles are used without bands, e.g. Beam Cables, Curb Return, therefore they do not have matching band sets.

Profile View Styles

The profile view style manages the grid appearance and the profile view description. Some of the profile view style names specify the grid type:

  • ... | Full Grid
  • ... | Major Grid
  • ... | Major Horizontal Grid
  • … | Clipped Full Vertical Grid

The differences between them are shown in the images below.

... | Full Grid

... | Major Grid

... | Major Horizontal Grid

… | Clipped Full Vertical Grid

(the grid lines extend to the selected profile, e.g.: vertical alignment)

The Clip Grid option can be set in the Profile View Properties window, Profiles tab:

The profile view styles for Pipes and Channels have a vertical exaggeration of 5, the Mass-haul style has a vertical exaggeration of 0.004 and all the other styles have a vertical exaggeration of 10.

Split Profile View Styles

Split profile view styles are used for split profile views. When the profile view is split, the first section must use the style which contains … | First Section in the style name. The following sections must use the style which contains … | Following Section in the style name:

Split profile view styles which contain string … | Pipe | Channel have a vertical exaggeration of 5 and are used for pipe and channel profile views. All the other split profile view styles have vertical exaggeration of 10.

Split profile view styles have four grid types:

  • … | Full Grid
  • … | Major Grid
  • … | Major Horizontal Grid
  • … | Clipped Full Vertical Grid

| Full Grid

… | Major Grid

… | Major Horizontal Grid

… | Clipped Full Vertical Grid

(grid lines extend to the specified profile, e.g. vertical alignment)

The Clip Grid option can be set in the Profile View Properties window, Profiles tab:

Profile View Band Sets

The band set name contains the following information:

  • Object type it is suitable for (pipe, road, channel, mass-haul etc.)
  • Band set number (1, 2, 3, …)
  • Chainage units (km or m)

For some object types multiple band sets are available. Each band set has a number and most of the band sets are available with the chainage units in kilometres or meters. The example below shows a few band sets for single roads:

Road | Single | Band Set 1 | m

Road | Single | Band Set 1 | km

Road | Single | Band Set 2 | m

Road | Single | Band Set 2 | km

Road | Single | Band Set 3 | m

Road | Single | Band Set 3 | km

Road | Single | Band Set 4 | m

Road | Single | Band Set 4 | km

Profile view bands need to read data from the profiles, therefore Profile 1 and Profile 2 must be set in the Profile View Properties window, Bands tab. The band style name specifies what should be set as a Profile 1 and Profile 2. Only band styles with capital letters must have Profile 1 and Profile 2 set. All other bands written in small letters (only first letter is capital) containing NA in the name indicates that they are not applicable, thus the user can have any profile selected under Profile 1 and Profile 2:

Profile 1 is used to define the geometry points at which band details must be displayed (beginning of vertical curve, end of vertical curve, PVI, start, end, etc.). Profile 2 is used for the elevation values, which are displayed in the band. To specify geometry points, click on the ellipsis icon in the Geometry Points column:

The geometry points can only be set for Profile 1:

This band set makes cleaning up overlapping labels much easier. It was used in the Clean-up overlapping labels in profile view video:
