Crossing Services (pipes, cables etc.)

Services as COGO Points

Note: This chapter assumes that the reader is familiar with COGO points from the CIVIL 3D ESSENTIALS − Cogo Points chapter.

  1. Create a COGO point at the location where a service crosses a pipeline and assign an elevation to this point (the elevation is equal to the elevation of the service).

  2. Open the Create Points toolbar by using the Points – Create Points command**:**

  3. Specify the default properties as needed in the Create Points toolbar:

  4. If you need to create a point at a specific chainage use the Manual point creation option and the Station Offset transparent command:

Transparent command

  1. Specify the station, offset, elevation and insertion point:

  2. Click on the profile view you want to project the COGO point onto and select the Project Objects To Profile View command from the contextual ribbon:

  3. Select the COGO point(s) in plan and press Enter. A new window will open where you can define a Style, Elevation and Point Description. When you click OK the COGO point will be projected onto the profile view:

  4. Objects projected onto the profile view can be managed in the Profile View Properties, Projections tab**:**

Services as Pipe Network

If you have drawings with lines which represent a pipe network (or any other services, cables etc.) and a text file with levels, you can create a pipe network and assign elevations from the text file. It is recommended to have the services in a separate drawing and to use data shortcuts to bring them into the design drawing. The workflow described below uses data shortcuts (it assumes that users have knowledge of data shortcuts).

  1. Create a new drawing based on the Devotech template and copy the lines, representing the pipe network, into the drawing.

  2. Create a reference for the NGL surface:

  3. Create an empty pipe network by using the Pipes – Create Pipe Network by Layout command**:**

  4. Specify a Network name, parts list and the reference Surface Name:

  5. Use the stormwater, sewer or water wizards:

  6. Swap pipes and structures according to their real size.

  7. Create a surface from the text file containing the invert levels (the surface will represent the invert levels). You can create a surface by using the Surfaces – Create Surface command**:**

  8. Specify the surface Name:

  9. Add a Point File to the surface definition:

  10. Assign the pipe network invert levels from the invert surface using the Devotech iDAS Adjust Inverts command**:**

  11. Specify a depth of 0, the surface and apply it to the pipes:

  12. Create a data shortcut for the pipe network:

  13. Switch to your design drawing and create a reference for the stormwater pipe network:

The referenced network in the design drawing:

  1. Go to the Profile View Properties of the profile the stormwater network needs to be displayed in:

  2. In the Pipe Networks tab change Draw to Yes and change the Style Override to Stormwater | Section style for Longsection:

The referenced network displayed in a profile view with the section style:

  1. You can add labels for crossing pipes in the profile view:
